“Nothing worthwhile has ever been accomplished with a guarantee of success.” John F. Kennedy
Seth Godin writes of the difference between the “safety zone” and the “comfort zone”. The comfort zone is like the name says, where you are comfortable. You believe you know what will happen and how you and others will respond. The safety zone is where you are safe. Seth believes they are very different now. He believes the comfort zone is no longer safe. The secure job which you can work at for 30 years and retire is gone. The tenured professor, seniority and partners golfing 3 days a week are nostalgic ideas. (I think a good thing) Results and value are what makes you safe now. Results and value are risky and scary not comfortable. If you follow the masses you will be valued as one of the masses. If you do something unique your value will be of one. It might be highly valued or looked upon as crazy but either way you will be the only one.
I don’t even know that a college education is the best path anymore. Betting on acquiring a secure job that will pay off the rising cost of a diploma is scary too. Creating value for others is the only way I see security and people don’t value the masses, they value the unique.
What is unique about you and your ideas?
